Coastal Corridor Transportation Initiative
An Implementation Strategy to Meet the South Bay’s Mobility Needs
A Partnership of South Bay Cities Council of Governments & El Segundo Employers Association
What is it?
The Coastal Corridor is a strategic approach to tackling congestion and mobility challenges in the South Bay. This unprecedented multi-jurisdictional multi-modal investment portfolio has resulted in a consensus of South Bay projects, identified as short and long-term improvements for regional transportation needs. It is designed to allow for a quick response strategy to fill funding gaps and serve as an institutional and political vehicle to advance corridor-wide projects. It coordinates transportation and economic development projections and offers the promise of lasting improvements for the subregion’s cities, communities and businesses.Where is it?
The Coastal Corridor is an area broadly bounded by the I-10 Freeway on the north, La Brea/Western Avenue on the east, Pacific Coast Highway on the south and the Pacific Ocean on the west. How did it begin?
The Coastal Corridor began as a joint project of the South Bay Cities Council of Governments (SBCCOG), the Westside Cities Association and the El Segundo Employers’ Association (ESEA). The first phase was data collection which included reviewing all planned projects in the larger project area and identifying transportation mitigation ‘gaps’ that still existed. The current phase is to move the identified South Bay projects to implementation. The Westside Cities Association is developing its own implementation plan. What are the critical Corridor issues?
Congestion along key corridors, at intersections and at access points along the I-405; infrastructure maintenance, increased transit ridership. What are the recommended improvements?
Roadway widenings, realignments to freeways and freeway ramps; ITS and signal system improvements; grade crossing improvements; expanded bike network; Metro Rapid expansion; Beach Cities Transit Terminal; Green Line Extension; Crenshaw CorridorWhat is the cost?
The sum of all the Initiative portfolio projects is approximately $378 million. What are the next steps?
Inclusion in the SCAG RTP and MTA LRPA Partnership of South Bay Cities Council of Governments & El Segundo Employers Association
