Livable Communities Working Group Meeting

Date:
Wednesday, July 16, 2014
Time:
2:30 P.M. - 4:30 P.M.

The South Bay Cities Council of Governments Livable Communities Working Group is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, July 16, 2014.

MEETING TIME:  2:30 P.M. to 4:30 P.M.

LOCATION:  South Bay Environmental Services Center, 20285 So. Western Avenue, Suite 100, Torrance 90501

The meeting agenda is posted below.

To LCWG Members;

Metro has been conducting outreach to solicit input to the development of its Complete Streets Policy.  Tham Nguyen will collect our comments and reactions and provide an update on what sort of comments Metro has been receiving elsewhere.  She will also identify potential opportunities to help advance state, regional and local complete streets efforts.  This is a good opportunity to share with Metro your city’s perspective and/or experience with complete streets policies or implementation.

This segues nicely into a discussion of recent developments at SCAG regarding Active Transportation.  There is a controversy about AT metrics used by SCAG and challenges to the very definition of AT and its justification.  Issues as basic as the definition of a walking trip and which walking trips should be counted are at the heart of the metrics issue.  Questions have also been raised about the extent to which AT can be justified by the “obesity crisis.”   And so forth. I will share the discussions that have been occurring downtown and solicit your perspective.

Dan Sturges will join us again and present his latest thinking on a way to demonstrate the COG’s “poly-modal mobility strategy.”  Dan has outlined a new project that we will search for funding to support, once it’s refined.  As usual, Dan is on the cutting edge;  we want your reaction to this latest project idea, the “mobility bundle.”

There will also be the usual updates of programs and policies that affect South Bay cities.  Metro’s Mobility Matrix planning which is about to begin is of special interest. The ”Matrix” will feed into the COG’s Strategic Growth Council grant which we are in the process of scoping.  Jacki will outline the project and where we are in contract preparation.  I expect to present a detailed overview of the SGC project at the September LCWG meeting.

The remaining LCWG 2014 meetings will be in September and November as we will continue to alternate 3rd Wednesday’s with the COG’s Energy Efficiency Climate Action Plan Working Group (EECAP), at least for the rest of the year.

Hope to see you next Wednesday.  As usual, please RSVP to Rosie Lackow at rosemary@southbaycities.org
